Dahlia Planting and Care

Pick a spot for your dahlias that gets plenty of sun. Plant your tubers in holes that are 4-6” deep and 12” apart, after danger of frost has passed. Make sure an “eye” (sprout) is pointed toward the sky! At Vibrant Valley Farm, we plant our tubers in early- to mid-May.  Water your dahlias when you plant them, and then not again until their sprouts break the surface of the soil. Plants get quite large, and sometimes require staking to stay upright.

Dahlias can also be grown in large pots. If you want to grow your dahlias in containers, choose a pot that holds 5 to 7 gallons of soil and fill with a good potting soil/compost blend.

Dahlias take anywhere from 12-16 weeks to start blooming. Once they start, they will produce an abundance of flowers until first frost. If harvesting flowers, cut them in the cool of the early morning once the flowers are in full bloom. Dahlia flowers last 5-7 days if they are kept cool and their water is changed daily.
