Garlic
The foundation of our farm and every good meal
We love garlic!
It has been the backbone of our farm and a staple in our rotation. Garlic inspires us to dive deep and study the biodiversity of the cultivar, enhance soil quality and regenerative practices, and build our seed stock, retail outlets and wholesale customer base. We have partnered with other farmers, grown with youth groups and educational programs, and have spent years redefining our goals and roles as producers of this valued crop.
Garlic is in the ground for over nine months of the year, encouraging us to exemplify our best farming practices with the utmost care. We have changed our growing techniques with long term goals to stop using plastic, in turn finding other ways to build the soil’s tilth as we grew our crop. We manage weeds with flaming weeding techniques followed by adding a layer of heavy straw to our beds to build top soil. We fertilize with chicken manure throughout its growing period, in addition to kelp and fish emulsion.
The varieties that have proven to do well and have been successful in our soil and seasonal rotation have been : Lortz, Romanian Red, Sicilian Artichoke, Red Toch, and Inchelum Artichoke.
